Cryptic Cats

T.G.I.T and today we met at De' Aprils for more wet Kway Teow with egg sauce.  We were missing 2 kittens, so it was only 4 of us, sitting outside and loving the rain during lunchtime because it kept us cool.  I often find myself wishing that I could be free to post everything that we kittens talk about during our lunches, but I can't, so I shall only leave you with these: 

Kittens 101

1.  It is very important to read the instructions and/or warnings on..err..things.  Better yet, let your man be the guinea pig.

2.  To rekindle the flames of desire, always have a "kiap" handy.

3.  Being plucky hurts.

4.  Being plucky is also self-gratifying.

5.  Older is definitely not necessarily wiser.

BBQ Galore

On Thursdays, as you know, happiness is a Kitten Lunch.  All Kittens present and accounted for, except Woo, who is dearly missed.  DeeT chose the Charcoal BBQ & Grill over at Batu Satu for our lunch date today.  It is located at the newly renovated LeGallery Suites Hotel (previously The Princess Inn) and has a trendy, if a little bit warm, outside seating area.

   

As usual we had the enormous Wings & Ribs Platter to share amongst us.  With the grilled honey wings, red hot buffalo wings together with rebel honey ribs and spicy tangy ribs accompanied by corn-on-cob, coleslaw and Cajun seasoned potato wedges, all for B$58.90, its really pretty good.

Today's Kitten Tales:

1. Pandas and their sex lives - When female pandas mate, they make sounds similar to asian porn stars.  Apparently, they also do missionary-style foreplay.  When I find a YouTube of it, I shall post this potentially very interesting sight.

2. Cross-stitching is in.  Seriously.

3. If you have legs from here to Brazil, it does not mean that everytime you wear a long skirt you look like Olive Oyl.  Olive Oyl is fictional.  You just look like you have great legs underneath that skirt. 

4. Nadi is going to grow up to be a lounge singer and then Tim-Tim will not let her sit with her band.

5. Kids do the sweetest things, like Nora making a fan, cut out from a Mikimoto advert no less, for her beloved mommy.

Swings, Hammocks & Errant Dads

Thank God its Thursday.  And lunch with the Kittens is always a learning experience.  Today we were at de Aprils in Kiulap, where we come for one thing and one thing only, the wet kway teow with egg sauce.  On most days the chef gets its quite right, but I thought he/she was a bit eager with the soy sauce on mine today.  Still, at B$5 its a good size and yummy and hits the nail right on the spot.

Life Lessons Learnt Today:

1.  If you have a swing in the garden, you must ensure that they are of the right proportions for a swinging good time.

2.  Hammocks are a good source of entertainment.  Made from non-abrasive material is a definite plus.

3.  Perfume smells differently on different skin.

4.  Black-rimmed bookish Marc Jacobs glasses with a messy bun can make a hot secretary out of you. 

5.  Dads, however badly behaved, are still very much loved.

Everyone made it to lunch, all in fine form, including oft-starring in our lunches (gallantly and sweetly, for a few brief minutes) Ben, the Spy Who Loves Woo.

Meowings

Missing a few kittens at lunch today, with Nings and DeeT away and Ms DJ has some work, so there was only us three.  We met up at Funbread in Gadong, a cafe which we all like because it has a nice outside sitting area and staff who dotes on us.  I had the bruschetta with strawberry daiquiri (virgin, of course), Babs had some Japanese noodles and Woo had the soup in a bread bowl like the one they have in Dome, only much cheaper and just as nice.  Speaking of Dome, you would have kept me as a customer but I asked for a little bit of extra mushroom sauce with my steak (which only had a teensy weensy bit of mushroom sauce) and you were going to CHARGE me for it???  Well I never. 

But I digress.  Back to lunch.

I realised that half a kitten lunch is still a kitten lunch, and whilst I missed having a full quorum, the camaraderie remains even with three and with this thought, I say a little Purrrrrr...

Kittens Love Rain

I have a love/hate relationship with Thursdays.  It usually starts with a meeting.  Which I hate.  And then kitten lunch.  Which I love.  Its really as simple as that.

It was my turn to choose a venue, so I chose Portview.  Portview, located in town, is always a firm favourite amongst us.  It has a good and varied Italian menu (I love the carpaccio and the seafood soup), local dishes cooked well (mee goreng!), super cafe latte, the butterfly ice tea we all love, and mostly, we love smokers and it has an outside area where you sit and look across the Brunei River over to Kampung Ayer.  Do try not to look at that big red anti-drug signage with the big-assed scary needle sticking out of it, but if you look elsewhere, the view is unique, kitschy and lovely.  And if it rains like it did today, calm and serene, if not a little blue.

This is the view from where I was sitting.  It was a little chilly sitting outside, but we took turns wearing Ms DJ's woolly cardigan.  We were all in good spirits especially Ms DJ :)  I was quite late for lunch because I got stuck in traffic enroute to town.  There was a big truck crane vehicle with very wet men on them fixing the decorative lights for His Majesty's birthday celebrations on the 15th of July, which promises to be a grand affair because His Majesty turns 60 this year.  Happy Birthday Your Majesty, but I wish the electrical department or whomever was in charge, could fix the lights at night when there are less cars on the road.  Not during lunchtime rush hour, and when it is raining cats and dogs.  Firstly, its not safe for those poor guys.  Secondly, think of those parents stuck in traffic with kids in the car with that yawn-inducing, mumbling woman on Kristal FM.

Man, I must learn to take a chill-pill.

Kitten Tales

Its Thursday and I get to have lunch with The Kittens.  Today we met at Portview and sat at our favourite table overlooking the Brunei river.  We had a full quorum and lots of laughs and stories and giggles and relevations over cigs, food and drinks.  Deeeee-stress.  I promised the girls 'what happens at kitten lunch stays at kitten lunch' but let me tell you girls that I am storing memories in my head so that I can write an expose at the age of 80.  I'll even call it The Kitten Tales :)

The 1st of June also marks the end of the paddy harvesting season and the beginning of the new planting season.  The Bidayuhs, Ibans, Dusuns and Kedazans the indeginous people of Sabah and Sarawak celebrates the festival by dancing the shemazau and singing and drinking copious amounts of tuak or rice wine in their longhouses:

Through all of this, though, you might well find yourself dancing, as we were, with rice wine flowing: it's sweet, hot taste passing our lips in multiple sips from shot glasses made from hollowed bamboo. It was fuel for the dancers - young, lithe, tawny skinned nubiles whose wide, brown eyes sparkled with laughter at our attempts to bird-dance. It is their Malaysian custom to keep dancing as long as the guests keep smiling, just as it Western custom to keep smiling in appreciation of hospitality and kindness. I haven't seen The Kittens in almost a week but tomorrow is thankfully Thursday.  I wanted to post a picture of The Kittens here but realise that I don't have one!  So this will have to suffice....
