Miss Bimbo

Bimbo is defined by the freedictionary.com as "vacuous" or "as having an exaggerated interest in her sexual appeal". There's been some adverse publicity online about an internet game called Miss Bimbo, whose target audience are impressionable teens, aiming to be the the coolest chick on the online block by choosing the right clothes, having the most money, keeping the right boyfriend and staying thin. You know, think Paris Hilton.

Although my teenage years have long past, I've registered myself to see what the hype is all about. I entered a fake birthdate because I think one's chances of being a bimbo decreases with age but I could be wrong. After you register your bimbo, the game sets goals for you to achieve. My bimbo's goals were these:

While I think renting an apartment shows a degree of independence and undertaking some training shows commitment, traits that should be feted...buuut I can't go to the next stage and unlock new clothes et al, if I don't style my hair blonde and with pigtails. I also need to feed my bimbo. But not too much. There is a target weight for my 5 feet 6 inches gal. And apparently you can opt for some plastic surgery in higher levels of bimbo-ness (Level 11 - Bigger is better. Have a breast operation).

As you can see, I haven't figured out how to dress my bimbo. I'm slightly worried that she's going about in her knickers and unable to find a boyfriend because I get bimbo points for finding a sugar daddy.

What do I think of missbimbo.com? Its a pretty harmless site if you are an adult. For someone's whose faced peer pressure and discovered, perhaps painfully, that it ain't all that. The administrators have since taken off the diet pills option, quite rightly I thought. The site should restrict urderaged girls and instead promoted to adult females (I could see a Facebook version of it). Women who like a bit of frivolity and know that plastic surgery are best left for the hollywood types, what you wear can matter but you gotta watch what you eat, won't take it too seriously and might enjoy it for a while.

Oprah's Cottoned On Pregnant Man!

Bobby's gone off for a stud weekend in Labuan with groom/stag/best mate SP together with the baddest rent-a-crowd, Mimi's having her afternoon nap, Beloved Son is eating Planter's honey roasted cashew nuts $13.40 (!) from Supasave. So this seems a good time as any to bring you Thomas Beatie.

The pregnant man was a guest on Oprah, and someone kindly liveblogged it. Apparently we're not punk'd after all.

And Buzzfeed hits the spot, pun intended, when they say:

The pregnant man tells an intrigued Oprah that his enlarged clitoris grew into a penis, hence, he grew what we've now coined a "dickoris." Neither dick nor clitoris, the dickoris occupies a happy middle ground in the world of genitalia.

Oh dear.

Flying Penguins

Most evenings Bobby and I sit on our daybed in the orange verandah and tell each other tales we get off the internet. This evening he told me about the flying penguins story he read on the Telegraph Online. "Come see the pictures", he said. So I peered over and saw these plump penguins zooming through the air on the Telegraph site.

"Huh. Flying Penguins. Who would've thought penguins could fly eh."

I thought I'd do a post about penguins taking flight since its been a slow news day. As I was saving the picture for my post, I got to thinking about how terribly cute and sturdily plump penguins were and no, nope, they really don't look like they could fly.

A Pregnant Man?

Have you heard about the woman who wants to be a man and became a man by taking hormones but opted out of the complete sex change by taking the hormones to be less woman but kept the organs? Confusing yes, but we must focus. She became a man and got married to a woman. They decided to have children but found out that the wife was unable to. So the man stepped up to the plate, and stepped up to the plate he did.

Meet Thomas Beatie, the first man to become pregnant, and about to deliver a baby girl in just a few weeks. I don't quite know how I feel about this, but I do know that I can't help think that he's still a woman.

Are we being Punk'd? His neighbours say we are.

Keep Your Spurs On

Bobby is a Tottenham Hotspurs fan. That's the same football club plodding along the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup. But here's one for the underdogs, Tottenham Hotspurs WON the Carling Cup final against Chelsea last Sunday. Bobby was as happy as the Tottenham players. Apparently not quite as ecstatic as the Spur's Captain Ledley King. The same Ledley King who wins the best picture of the week simply because he's so deserving of this headline from the Telegraph Online:

Who is Time Magazine's Person Of The Year 2006? It's YOU honey.

TIMES magazine has an annual Person Of The Year issue that features a profile of a man, woman, couple, group, idea, place or machine that "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year". It used to be known as the Man Of The Year, and during the time of political correctness it was retitled Person of The Year. The Computer had its year in 1982 as the first non-human picked. In 2005 there was more than one recipient with PersonS of The Year that profiled Bono, Bill Gates and wife, Melinda as The Good Samaritans.

This year TIME has chosen YOU: Those who use or create content on the World Wide Web. You know who you are. The same ones that go home and fire up that computer that's who. You say hello to the friends you make online by posting comments, sometimes you just watch or listen, sometimes you play RPG games with a geek like you in Finland, and most times you're simply curious.

[It reminded me of the Brownies initiation song I undertook at St. Andrew's school many years ago, "Twist me and turn me and show me the Elf. You look in the reflective mylar mirror fronting TIME's December 2006 issue and then saw? Yourself."]

In his take on why YOU were chosen TIME's Person of The Year Richard Stengel, opines:

"The new media age of Web 2.0 is threatening only if you believe that an excess of democracy is the road to anarchy. I don't."

I simply think that we make our world a cosier place to live in. Way to go us.

Mad For Mona

There are a lot more people who wonder abut the truth behind Mona Lisa's smile than you think. It seems that there are rooms full of people who sit around and wonder why is La Lisa smiling (unpaid, I hope). Probably the most famous of Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, the Mona Lisa has been the subject of many theories made eternal in books, films, songs, Mad Magazine, even The Far Side. I suppose millions of fans can't be wrong, she is a pretty girl.

In his book The Da Vinci Code, author Dan Brown says Mona is androgynous, symbolising the unorthodox belief in feminine and masculine principles. The Mona Lisa has also been said to be a self-potrait of Leonardo. Perhaps Da Vinci was the first famous closet cross-dresser. The real identity of the Mona Lisa is believed by many scholars to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a wealthy silk trader Francesco del Giocondo, said to be a friend of Da Vinci's.

And since her completion in 1507, the lady has been everywhere. Louis the XVI had her in his palace in Versailles. The Louvre again, when Napoleon took her into his bedroom. But she now resides peacefully at the Louvre, Paris, gawked by millions. I have not had the chance to see the painting up close but from what I've heard, your first sight of the Mona Lisa could be a slight disappointment simply because of its actual size. Which is bijou and not as big as you have imagined. A small moue at first but then I can imagine the awe you feel after.

So this evening the BBC on Astro ran a story about the possible reason behind Mona Lisa's smile. Aside from reasoning that her smile is only truly visible when one is looking at other parts of the painting, the Canadian scientists reported that she could have been pregnant or had recently given birth, occasions that could have led to her beatific smile.

Or, because she could just be posing, BML (buat muka lawa - make a pretty face), in my part of the world.

Condi Heart Peter?

Before the husband read me the Condoleeza Rice story featured in last weekend's Sunday Times, I had assumed the woman was married. With two children, a boy and a girl perhaps. Over-achiever that she is.

The article headline read "The Man In Condi's Life?" and immediately I had visions of a philandering Condi. But there is no husband to ire, for Ms. Rice is a 51 year old unmarried woman. What one would unkindly call a spinster in the days of yore. An andartu (anak dara tua) in my part of the world. But let's not forget that she is a woman that has achieved much and I admire her striding out in her FMBs as the US Secretary of State.

The man the article referred to is Canada's Foreign Minister Peter MacKay, 41 years and newly singled. Condoleeza and Peter met in Nova Scotia this week to mark fifth aniversary of 9/11, discuss trade issues and getting a cuppa at local hangout Tim Hortons. Although Rice shrugged off the reports, I see no harm in the dalliance for it could be good for US and Canada relations.

And I'm positive Condi could do with a little bit of lovin'.

So as not to be thought as frivolous, I shall post about the IMF.

The husband: Did you hear about the IMF in Singapore?
Me: No I haven't. And if you think I'm going to post about the IMF, you have another thing coming...
The husband: Well, the IMF delegates, and their spouses, will get a discount on Botox and Laser treatments!
Me: No way! That is so blogworthy!

To wit.

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are having meetings in Singapore next week to discuss monetary and poverty issues. More than 23,000 people have registered to attend, to discuss not only the world's pressing problems but perhaps also to enjoy an unexpected perk.

The Raffles Hospital put out an ad in the local newspaper offering a 10% discount on beauty treatments to the delegates, and their spouses, in an endeavor to encourage medical tourism.

Bless them.

Because not only will the delegates feel good about their humanitarian efforts, they'll look good too.
