I use the short messaging system too, and these days it seems we can't do anything without sending a text message first. Whether on our mobiles or instant messaging online, we send texts to make dinner plans, confirm estimated time of arrivals and even to fall in love.
When we need to say something instantly and with least effort expended as possible (and fair to say, with the least intrusion), there it is. Instant messaging has reached epic proportions that the word "Textpert" exists! Bruclass has a how-to-be-a-textpert list, designed to help send text or instant messaging in 40 letters or less. Emoticons such as :) for happy, or :( for sad, are pretty much used by all. As are text shorthand such as FYI (for your information) or OTW (on the way) are run-of-the-mill kinda stuffs. But, there are many, many more (some sillier than others) for ye lazy bums.
Emoticons such as these:
(B:-) means I Am Wearing Cheap Sunglasses On My Head. Now. Why would someone want to admit to that?
;^|/) means I Am Having A Humour Bypass. Where? How? What does this mean??
,:-( means I've Just Had A Serious Haircut. As opposed to a silly emoticon?
And these short text gems:
FICCL - Frankly, I Couldn't Care Less. Penalised for unnecessary use of the letter F.
IYDKIDKWD - If You Don't Know, I Don't Know Who Does. If you really need to say this, you need to say this in a memo.
YYSSW - Yeah, Yeah, Sure Sure, Whatever. Wouldn't one just type in K?
Personally I would like to see more use of proper words and sentences but admittedly, that defeats the purpose of a short messaging system. And despite being no textpert, sometimes I do cave in.
